THE 21st CENTURY NEW YEAR'S DAY
October 7, 2011, Huntington Beach, CA - What are your plans for New Year's Day? This January 1, 2012, hundreds of "Lionhearted" folks will be splashing into chilly surf near the Huntington Beach Pier to celebrate the New Year for the 12th annual Surf City Splash. All the "sane" people will be watching from the pier above or the safe shore as the New Year's Day revelers splash and frolic in the water before running back to hug their friends and celebrate a fresh start to the New Year. The HB International Surfing Museum will benefit from donations received for certificates of "Lionheartedness" or "Sanity" at this annual event. There will be a craft fair on Pier Plaza for the day. "We'll be washing off the old of 2011," says Lee Love, who has organized the event since the beginning of the new millennium when Huntington Beach resident Michael Parks jumped in the water with a few friends as something crazy to do for New Year's Day. The "Polar Plunge" was renamed "HB Pier Plaza Plunge" by Love, who was then President of the Huntington Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. Since then, Love has transitioned to the Surf City Lions branch of the HB Host Lions Club and changed the event name to "Surf City Splash". Local Lions host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the pier each New Year's Day. Donations for the food and beverages support Lion charities such as The International Surfing Museum, Canine Companions for Independence, Lions Hearing Clinic and Research Center, SightFirst Foundation, Therapeutic Riding Center, Project Self-Sufficiency, etc.
The Downtown Business Improvement District is participating in the Splash as part of the "SCORE" (Surf City Offers for Restaurants and Entertainment) program. All SPLASH Certificates come with a SCORE card which can be used at participating businesses for a discount or free gift.
Revelers will be dressed in glittery New Year's party hats and other costumes which will be judged and recognized along with the oldest and youngest participants and furthest distance traveled. A special award will go to the largest group, organization or club. Recognition will also go to local volunteers and city officials.
Save the date, and plan to join us for this "Splash Tradition". Online pre-registration forms for the HB Surf City Splash 2012 are available at www.HBSurfCitySplash.com
